WHY IS A “DYNO TUNE” NEEDED AND WHY DO I ALWAYS HEAR ABOUT IT?
When it comes to making horsepower and torque there are many different options. It could be as simple as opening up a magazine or internet forum and choosing an already proven combination or paying a high-end performance shop (like Lashway) to spec out a winning combination for your specific needs.
No matter what combination you choose it must make optimum power, that is where engine calibrating comes in. Just as the OEM spends million of dollars calibrating their engines to run hard and last for tens of thousands of miles, you must calibrate your engine for the changes you have made, this goes for transmissions as well. Whenever a change is made to the way an engine will run calibrating must take place.
Many performance enthusiasts will disregard this aspect due to the fact that if they make changes, the basic OEM tune will usually allow the engine to run on a most basic level. So ask yourself, what is the point of all the work and time to make power, when the end result is less then it should be? That is the point of tuning.
After a full dyno tune a vehicle’s new modifications will run to their fullest potential. The air fuel ratio will be optimal for power and the timing will be at its safe limits allowing the motor to use its new modifications efficiently.
WHY NOT JUST BUY A HANDHELD OR MAIL ORDER TUNE?
The answer to this is simple. Just as the OEM developed their tuning to work well in every car they have, handhelds work on the same principle. Mail order tuning and handhelds, even when programmed for specific modifications, are still made to work on EVERY car with these similar modifications. This limits the maximum power to be gained. When a vehicle it strapped to a dyno for a full tune every aspect for that EXACT car with those EXACT modifications are tuned to the fullest, the maximum amount of timing, the best air fuel ratio, the best shift points, the fastest shift times, the correct redline and even specific aspects the owner asks for, after all they are the boss.
